✷ About the Saxons

OUR STORY

✷ ORIGEM

Where it all began

In the 1960s, in Mason’s Addition, Nassau, a group of young people transformed the little they had into much more than art — they created a movement. Among simple shacks, cramped yards, and dirt roads, Black hands shaped cardboard, wire, and paint into costumes that screamed identity. Rhythm became resistance. The beat became a voice. This is how the Shell Saxons Superstars were born — not as a parade group, but as a living expression of a people.

✷ CREATIVE EXPLOSION

The rhythm revolution

Since their earliest parades, the Saxons didn’t just captivate — they made an impact. Each theme, from “The Crawfish” to “The Magical Shell Kingdom”, was a deep dive into ancestry, fantasy, and the cultural strength of the Bahamas. With monumental costumes and powerful musical arrangements, the Saxons crafted a style all their own — visual, sonic, and emotional. Every parade became a choreographed spectacle of history, art, and pride.

✷ GOLDEN AGE

Glory and legacy

In the 1980s came their crowning moment. A series of historic victories established the Saxons as the ultimate reference in Junkanoo. With sponsorship from Shell and the charismatic leadership of Percy “Vola” Francis, the group grew, reinvented itself, and won the hearts of the people. Bay Street came to a standstill. The nation roared. The name Saxons became synonymous with cultural excellence, collective strength, and undeniable talent.

✷ LIVING TRADITION

Culture that is taught

But the legacy of the Saxons goes beyond the parade. It has been recorded, preserved, and shared. Dr. Emmanuel Francis, one of the group’s foundational figures, documented its history and teachings in books and manuals that now serve as a reference for future generations. The Saxons became a classroom — a symbol of living heritage and an art form that goes far beyond the stage: it educates, inspires, and transforms.

✷ TODAY AND ALWAYS

A legacy that beats strong

Today, with over 300,000 fans in the Bahamas and thousands more around the world, the Shell Saxons Superstars remain a powerful symbol of art, pride, and unity. Every costume, every beat, every step is a tribute to their roots and to the strength of a people who turn culture into spectacle.
